AI Voice Agent Billing in India: Per-Minute Rates vs 30-Second Pulses

12 October 2026 · NimbleBiz Team

Short answer: AI voice agent billing in India is not always based on the exact seconds used. Some plans bill in 30-second pulses, rounding every call up to the next half-minute. Compare vendors using your actual call-length distribution, not only the headline per-minute rate, and confirm which charges follow each rounding rule.

AI voice agent billing per minute vs 30-second pulses

Imagine two voice-agent quotes that both say “per minute.” One charges for measured seconds; another charges in 30-second blocks. The second may bill a 31-second call as 60 seconds. A call that ends just before the next block costs less than one that crosses it, even when the difference is only a few seconds.

This is a billing-model comparison, not a claim that every Indian AI voice provider rounds calls the same way.

Bolna's official pricing page describes its Pilot plan as billed in 30-second pulses. That statement applies to the identified plan; do not assume its other plans share the same meter.

How to calculate billable minutes

For a hypothetical 30-second-pulse plan:

Billable seconds = round actual call seconds up to the next multiple of 30.

Billable minutes = billable seconds ÷ 60.

For a hypothetical exact-second plan:

Billable minutes = actual call seconds ÷ 60.

If the hypothetical unit price is ₹6 per minute, the difference looks like this. These are illustrative calculations, not vendor quotes.

Actual callExact-second bill30-second-pulse billPulse premium
12 seconds₹1.20₹3.00₹1.80
31 seconds₹3.10₹6.00₹2.90
61 seconds₹6.10₹9.00₹2.90
90 seconds₹9.00₹9.00₹0.00

If a provider instead rounds every call to a whole minute, the same 31-second call would be billed as one minute. Always ask which model the quote actually uses.

Estimate a realistic monthly bill

Start with a sample of your expected calls. Group them by duration: under 30 seconds, 31–60 seconds, 61–90 seconds and so on. Apply each vendor's rounding rule to each call, then sum the billable duration. Rounding only the monthly total will understate charges under per-call pulse billing.

For example, ten calls lasting 31 seconds each represent 310 actual seconds, or about 5.17 minutes. With per-call 30-second rounding, they become 600 billable seconds, or 10 minutes. At the illustrative ₹6 rate, that is ₹60 instead of ₹31. The difference is caused by the call distribution, not a change in the quoted unit rate.

Use a spreadsheet with these columns:

  • Call identifier and actual duration in seconds.
  • Billable duration under each vendor's rule.
  • Effective charge per call, including any separate line items.
  • Call outcome, so you can calculate cost per completed task rather than only cost per minute.

What might sit outside the headline rate?

A single advertised minute price may not represent every component of a call. Bolna's pricing documentation breaks call cost into speech-to-text, language-model, text-to-speech, telephony and platform components. Its documented meters differ: transcription can be rounded to seconds, telephony to minutes, and LLM usage to tokens. Check the current contract before applying any published example.

Ask whether the following are included or separately metered:

  • Speech-to-text (STT), language-model (LLM) and text-to-speech (TTS) usage.
  • Telephone connectivity, call setup and any number rental.
  • Platform or orchestration fees.
  • Failed calls, voicemail, transfers, holds and silence.
  • Taxes, currency conversion and prepaid-credit expiry.

A 30-second pulse on one plan or fee does not prove that every call component is rounded identically.

Five questions to send each vendor

  1. Does the quoted rate apply to exact seconds, 30-second pulses or whole minutes?
  2. Is rounding applied per call, per leg, per component or to an aggregate monthly total?
  3. When does billing start and stop: dial attempt, answer, agent connection or hang-up?
  4. Are unanswered calls, transfers and retries chargeable? If so, under which meter?
  5. Can you export itemised usage with actual duration, billable duration and each charge component?

Request a written example for a 31-second connected call and a 61-second connected call. These expose the rounding boundary quickly.

How to compare NimbleBiz fairly

The NimbleBiz pricing page says voice usage is billed per minute and that plans include monthly voice-minute allowances, with additional usage billed from the wallet. It does not publicly establish a 30-second pulse rule. Do not assume NimbleBiz uses Bolna's billing increment, or vice versa.

For a fair comparison, request the current NimbleBiz quote and billing definition, then apply it to the same sample of call durations and outcomes as the competing quote. Compare the full monthly bill and cost per qualified conversation, appointment or resolved support request, depending on your use case.

Pre-purchase billing checklist

  • Confirm the unit price, currency and taxes in writing.
  • Confirm the rounding increment and the unit to which it applies.
  • Test calls immediately below and above billing boundaries.
  • Separate platform, AI model and telephony meters.
  • Recalculate costs using your own duration distribution.
  • Compare cost per useful outcome, not just nominal minutes.
  • Check overage rates and billing exports before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Is per-minute billing the same as billing every 60 seconds?

No. “Per minute” states a unit of price but may not specify the billing increment. Ask whether usage is measured by the second, rounded in 30-second pulses or rounded to whole minutes.

What is a 30-second billing pulse?

It is a half-minute billing block. Under per-call round-up billing, a call lasting 31 seconds consumes two 30-second blocks, while a 30-second call consumes one.

Does Bolna bill every plan in 30-second pulses?

Its official pricing page specifically identifies 30-second pulses for the Pilot plan. Confirm the terms of any other plan directly rather than generalising from that statement.

Does NimbleBiz use 30-second pulses?

The public NimbleBiz pricing page states that voice usage is billed per minute but does not specify a pulse increment. Ask NimbleBiz for the current billing unit and a sample itemised invoice.

Are unanswered calls always free?

Do not assume so. Ask when each billable component begins, especially telephony, call attempts and transfers. Terms can differ by provider and contract.

What metric matters besides the minute rate?

Cost per completed business outcome. A lower per-minute price can still be more expensive if calls are longer, rounded more aggressively or fail to complete the task.
