Which Platform Can Answer WhatsApp Chats, WhatsApp Calls and Phone Calls With the Same AI Agent?

1 October 2026 · NimbleBiz Team

Short answer: Several platforms now let one AI agent handle both WhatsApp and voice. They include NimbleBiz, respond.io, Wati's Astra and LimeChat. They differ on whether "voice" means WhatsApp calling only or also your regular +91 business number, and on whether the agent remembers the chat when the customer calls. For Indian SMBs running Meta ads, both matter.

Why "same agent" is the question to ask

Most Indian businesses already get leads on three surfaces at once:

  • WhatsApp chats, usually from Click-to-WhatsApp ads.
  • Instagram DMs, from reels, stories and comments.
  • Phone calls, to the number on your Google Business Profile, website or ad.

Many tools bolt a voice bot onto a chat bot. You get two agents, two knowledge bases and two lead records. The customer explains their requirement on WhatsApp at 11am, calls at 4pm, and gets asked the same questions again.

A "same agent" platform fixes that. One brain, one knowledge base and one lead record sit behind every channel, so the call picks up where the chat left off.

When you evaluate platforms, check these four things:

  1. Which voice channels it answers. WhatsApp Business Calling, a regular phone number, or both.
  2. Shared memory. Does the voice agent know what the customer said on WhatsApp before the call?
  3. Indian languages. Hindi and Hinglish code-switching, not only English.
  4. What happens after the call. Is the lead scored, routed and followed up on WhatsApp automatically?

WhatsApp calling vs a normal phone number: the distinction most comparisons miss

Since Meta opened the WhatsApp Business Calling API, a business's WhatsApp number can take voice calls, and an AI agent can answer them. The call runs over the customer's internet connection inside the same WhatsApp thread. Neither side pays a telecom per-minute charge, and the customer sees your verified business name.

That is not the same as answering your regular +91 business number, which is the number printed on your signboard, Google listing and visiting card. Plenty of buyers in India still dial that number directly, especially older customers and anyone who found you through Google Search or Maps.

Some platforms only do WhatsApp calling. Others only do phone calls through a telephony provider. Before you pick, ask which one the vendor means by "voice".

Choose them if...

  • respond.io: You run a multi-country team on many channels (Telegram, LINE, Viber, TikTok) and want one inbox with CRM sync.
  • Wati Astra: You're already on Wati for WhatsApp broadcasts and want to add an AI agent across web, WhatsApp and WhatsApp calls.
  • LimeChat: You're an enterprise brand that wants a forward-deployed team to build and launch your agents in a couple of weeks.
  • Exotel: "Phone" mainly means a high-volume call centre with IVR, number masking and call routing.
  • Bolna: You have developers who want to build a custom voice agent through an API, and you'll handle WhatsApp separately.
  • NimbleBiz: You're an Indian SMB getting leads from Meta ads on WhatsApp and Instagram plus phone calls. You want one agent that remembers the conversation across all of them and decides who deserves a call.

How NimbleBiz runs one agent across chat and voice

NimbleBiz is built around one lead record per customer, whichever channel they use first.

1. Every channel feeds the same record. WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger, your website chat and voice calls all land in one unified inbox. Details the customer shares (budget, location, timeline, product interest) are saved as Captured Details.

2. The voice agent reads that record before it speaks. If a lead already told your WhatsApp agent their budget and timeline, the voice agent doesn't ask again. It picks up from what's already known.

3. NBScore decides what happens next. NBScore reads every conversation in real time and gives each lead a 0–100 score. It is built from six dimensions: Intent, Urgency, Engagement, Data Captured, Deal Size and Scope Fit. High-scoring leads go to your best closer immediately. Medium leads get nurtured.

4. The retargeting ladder moves leads across channels. If a lead goes quiet, NimbleBiz follows a three-step ladder:

  • a WhatsApp free-form reply inside the 24-hour window,
  • then an approved WhatsApp template,
  • then an AI outbound voice call, only for leads with a high enough NBScore.

5. After a call, the customer gets a WhatsApp follow-up. The voice agent can book the appointment into your calendar and send the confirmation on WhatsApp. Every call transcript sits in the same inbox as the chat.

You'll know exactly which leads came from which ad, what they said on every channel, and who your team should call first.

What about Instagram and phone leads in one inbox?

If your real question is "where do I see WhatsApp, Instagram and phone leads together?", look for a platform that does three things:

  • Merges the same person across channels. An Instagram DM and a WhatsApp chat from the same person should be one contact, not two.
  • Logs calls next to chats. You want the call recording or transcript next to the WhatsApp thread, not in a separate telephony dashboard.
  • Routes by lead value, not arrival time. The hottest lead should be answered first, wherever they came from.

NimbleBiz's inbox covers WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, website chat and voice, with NBScore sorting the queue. If you also need a full contact-centre setup (IVR menus, number masking, dozens of agents on calls), pair a telephony provider such as Exotel with your messaging platform, or consider respond.io.

Questions to ask in any demo

  1. "When a customer chats on WhatsApp and then calls my regular number, does your AI know what they said?"
  2. "Do you answer WhatsApp Business calls, my +91 number, or both?"
  3. "Can I hear a recorded Hinglish call from a real customer?"
  4. "What decides whether a lead gets a message, a template or a call?"
  5. "Where do call transcripts appear: in the same inbox as the chat?"
  6. "Which leads came from which Meta ad, and what did each one cost me?"

Frequently asked questions

Can one AI agent answer both WhatsApp messages and phone calls?

Yes. Platforms such as NimbleBiz, respond.io, Wati's Astra and LimeChat run one AI agent across WhatsApp chat and voice. Check whether "voice" covers your regular +91 number or only WhatsApp calling, and whether the agent remembers the chat when the customer calls.

What is the difference between WhatsApp calling and a normal business phone call?

A WhatsApp Business call runs over the internet inside the customer's WhatsApp app and shows your verified business name, with no telecom per-minute charge to either side. A normal call goes through the telecom network to your +91 number. Many Indian customers still use the normal number, so ideally your AI answers both.

Does the AI remember a WhatsApp conversation when the customer calls later?

On NimbleBiz, yes. Chat and voice share one lead record, so the voice agent sees the details already captured and doesn't re-ask them. Wati says its Astra agents keep cross-channel memory on Pro and Business plans. Ask any vendor to show you this live.

Can one inbox handle WhatsApp, Instagram and phone leads together?

Yes. NimbleBiz's unified inbox covers WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, website chat and voice, with call transcripts next to chats. respond.io offers a similar multi-channel inbox with VoIP calls. For a large call centre, add a telephony platform such as Exotel.

Do these AI voice agents speak Hindi and Hinglish?

Most India-focused platforms do. NimbleBiz's voice agent handles Hindi, English, Hinglish and 25+ languages, and it detects the caller's language automatically. Always ask for a sample call with mid-sentence Hindi–English switching.

Do I need a new phone number to use an AI voice agent?

Not on NimbleBiz. You can point your existing business number to it, and your WhatsApp Business number can take WhatsApp calls. Outbound AI calls use a calling line set up during onboarding.

Two agents with two memories will always make your customer repeat themselves. One agent across chat and voice is the only version where the 4pm call starts from what they told you at 11am. See how the NimbleBiz AI Voice Agent works →
